What is Reflexology?
For some reason I always assume everybody knows what Reflexology is. But why would you? Unless you are a Reflexologist or are having regular sessions, you probably won’t.
So let me explain this amazing complementary therapy to you.
Reflexology is a holistic and non-invasive complementary therapy which has been practised for 1000 of years in some form but has only been popular in the Western world for the last 100 years or so.
Complementary Therapies work alongside conventional or mainstream therapies not instead of them, ie the therapies I offer are not called "Alternative Therapies" as I do not replace a GP.
How does Reflexology work?
Reflexology is based on the theory that certain reflex points, either on the feet or hands, correspond with various areas of the body. A fully qualified Reflexologist will understand the “map of the foot” and thumb walk accordingly over these points. Imbalanced areas will be worked over several times in order to achieve a state of balance.
What are the benefits of Reflexology?
Reflexology promotes general well-being and deep relaxation. Reflexology reduces stress and anxiety levels which is a major factor for peoples’ diseases. Reflexology will make you feel more energised and less tired, your mood may improve. Reflexology is a nourishing and comforting treatment where the client is always treated individually and according to their needs.
What is the difference between Foot Massage and Reflexology?
I get asked this question a lot. Whilst I incorporate some foot massage in the beginning and at the end, Reflexology does not massage but works on many different reflex points. The main technique I use for this is called “thumb or caterpillar walking”. Sometimes I do hold a point for a while, sometimes I dig in and sometimes I work over it again and again.
What are the main reasons people use Reflexology?
People see me for a variety of reasons. Some come for general well-being, for the all important “ME TIME”, for preventative health care. Others come because they struggle with anxiety or stress. Some clients come with specific ailments and have heard that Reflexology is always a very useful tool to support our body’s healing process. And some women come throughout their pregnancy for a more gentle form of Reflexology, Maternity Reflexology which prepares the client and the unborn baby for giving birth.
How often should I go for Reflexology?
This is not an easy question to answer. Each client is an individual, each client has their own reason why they come and see me. If you are interested in maintaining your own general well-being, I would suggest once a month but if we are working on a specific imbalance, every fortnight or even a couple of weekly sessions might be more appropriate. Generally speaking, I do believe you should notice a difference after 3 sessions.
When should you avoid Reflexology?
There are very few reasons why you cannot see a Reflexologist, these are called contra indications. Fungal infections of the feet is one of these, extremely high blood pressure, cuts and grazes on feet, anybody under the influence of alcohol and people who are having a contagious disease should also not see a Reflexologist until these symptoms have disappeared.
Contrary to popular belief, a pregnant lady can see a Reflexologist from the first day of her pregnancy (or even whilst trying for a baby) as long as the Reflexologist has done additional training in Maternity Reflexology.
